We’re at a pivotal moment. Generative AI is reshaping the creative landscape at an unprecedented pace, offering both immense potential and significant risks.
The choices we make as a society will define not just the future of storytelling and gaming, but also the role of human expression in the next digital age. Until now, the AI narrative has been led by tech firms. But now it’s time for the creative industry to take a leading role and define AI’s future.
At Infinity Fiction, we firmly believe that AI is no substitute for human creativity – it often produces content that’s homogeneous and uninspired. Instead, we see AI as a tool to amplify human creativity, crafting ground breaking gaming experiences while unlocking new ways for creatives to publish, reach new audiences and monetise their work.
This isn’t just about our games. It’s about protecting the heart of storytelling and human creativity, ensuring AI innovation enhances rather than replaces human talent.
We’re excited to begin this conversation with the creative community and work together towards a future that champions both art and innovation. We’re at the start of our journey.
The Double-Edged Sword of Generative AI
Generative AI (Gen-AI) is now everywhere – transforming industries and society at an exponential pace and sparking an existential crisis for human creativity – from writing, art, voice, video and more recently even human imitations.
Many organisations have found themselves in a catch-22 scenario. They see the obvious and massive potential that Gen-AI offers and are investing heavily so that they are not left behind by their competition, however they are now faced with new challenges: protecting the authenticity and value of their brand, and safeguarding customer data and experience from the technology. Amazon faced exactly this problem in 2023, when AI first started to be used en-masse and the barrier to becoming an author was lowered to the point where the marketplace was overwhelmed by AI-generated books. Amazon’s reaction was to limit self-publishers to just three Kindle ebooks per day, which is still a concerning number.
Resistance from the creative industry is growing stronger and stronger against such an unregulated technology. The Writers Guild of America, representing 11,500 screenwriters, went on strike in 2023, citing the threat of AI as a main concern. This created a drought of quality entertainment, writers paused their livelihoods which cost the entertainment industry roughly $5 billion in the USA alone.
Creativity born from Gen-AI is often repetitive, formulaic, and lacking in depth, meaning and imagination. A recent study project done by Nina Beguš at UC Berkeley found that humans wrote richer and more unique narratives while AI produced many versions of the same stories filled with clichés and with flat, generic and unmotivated characters.
The worst may be yet to come, as the next generation of Gen-AI models are trained using more and more AI produced content, there is a real risk of a ‘death-spiral of homogenisation’. Without intervention, creatives and technologists will be in constant conflict with society being the biggest loser, suffering an epidemic loss of human creativity and innovation.
At Infinity Fiction we believe that AI cannot replicate the human soul that comes from human creativity. Our mission is to harness ‘Responsible AI’ as a tool that empowers creators, helping them scale their work, reach new audiences, and retain control over their intellectual property.
Bringing Human Stories to Life with Responsible AI
Our vision for the Infinity AI Game Engine is to empower creatives to take back control. Within our games, Gen-AI acts as an interface for players, bringing to life game worlds that have been written by talented human writers and operates strictly within a set of creative boundaries, whilst still being able to provide unique experiences. To achieve this we have developed a new method of world building that has given birth to a new genre of games: Living World RPG.
A Living World RPG goes beyond the traditional open-world experience by creating a game world that feels truly alive. The environments and inhabitants respond dynamically to player actions and events creating unique but consistent experiences. Unlike static open-world games, a Living World RPG features characters that have their own lives, routines, and stories that evolve over time.
Imagine a player is ordered by the king to deliver message to allies whilst preparing for an invasion. One player chooses not to deliver the message and do something else instead. When they return, they find the kingdom in chaos: villages have been razed, trade routes are cut off, and the once lively capital is filled with frightened citizens. Another player, who did deliver the king’s message, might return to find a prosperous kingdom.
These experiences aren’t random hallucinations, they’re the result of a ripple effect where earlier game events shape future interactions. The first player might then encounter displaced refugees in distant regions, merchants refuse to trade due to fear of bandits, or rival factions invading. Across a whole game world this butterfly effect means that the choices players make impact not just the main story, but also the small details of daily life, creating a Living World that evolves with every choice the players make.
Our vision for empowering Creatives: Writers, Artists, Voice Actors, Musicians
Creative writers and authors are just the beginning. We will be releasing the plans for our creative platform and marketplace at a later stage, however, our vision is to create a games development ecosystem with human talent as the foundation and AI as the supporting distribution technology.
Through it, creatives will be able to monetise their talent and IP to game creators who will be able to use our platform to distribute their games and utilise Gen-AI in a truly ethical manner. Using our engine, a game world and the rules applied to it are always consistent ensuring the integrity of any IP.
Tidefall is our showcase of what will be possible for creators. We have a team of creatives developing an extremely detailed world and impactful stories that, using our engine, produce a living world. The next step of the journey will be to allow gamers to see it, through dynamic art created from the style of our concept artists, hear it through voices generated from voice actors, be immersed by music generated from AI that has been trained on our game music composers’ work.
